34 Degas, old artist, no S, no saint, in the ascendant - upwards, Aged
artist = Degas, in the ascendant, without saint = (s)Aged
34) could be Degas reversed without the S for saint?
29 isn't as simple as "tails" is it? Reverse side of coin = tails. Doesn't have the head of a king or queen on it.
One definition of Woman is 'reverse side of coin', It could be W/o, without +Man, king or queen, in chess?
Reverse side of coin: N
Without: WO
Man: king
?

Thank you all. I was obsessed with saint being ”st” not ”s”.
Thanks, jadzia. Any views on the Woman?
Never heard that definition of woman, NaC. Is it from Chambers, or the like?
a queen is a man in chess, all the pieces are chessmen
Captain2, I should have said - it's in Chambers (13th ed). It says ' the reverse or Britannia side of a coin'.
Ta NaC, thought it must be from one of those 'funny' dictionaries. ;0)))
Thanks, Captain2.

Calibax, yes, that was mentioned earlier. I was querying my parsing, it might have been iffy!

Agree with bhg. This would be my answer.
Chinajan, that wouldn't fit with the crossing letters.
NaC has the correct parsing and definition
Thanks, Captain2. I persuaded myself ... eventually!
