Usually after we have been watching one of our programs, a sign comes up on the TV in the lower corner. It says "TV will soon turn off by idle TV; press a key to keep on". We have tried pressing all types of keys but nothing happens and few mins later, it goes off. We then restart the program and carry on watching. What does this sign mean and what do we press?

Mine does this. I press the OK key Samsung tv
TVs nowadays are set to switch off after a time if no buttons have been pressed (energy saving). If you go into "Settings" you will be able to vary the time or switch it off altogether.
After no input for a while mine also does this - I too hit the 'OK' button.
dries me mad, i've gone into settings for the tv not to switch off to no avail
It means you haven't done anything with the tv for a set amount of time eg. change channel (although you may have changed channel on the sky box, you haven't changed channel on the tv) or used the volume control.

When you get this message you need to use the tv remote not the sky remote to acknowedge the message.

There will be a setting in the menus to alter the time. On my Samsung its Settings button - General - Eco Settings -Auto Power Off
My LG TV has the same method of turning it off as Tuvok's Samsung.
I'm with virgin but when it comes up it's the tv controls you have to press not the virgin ones
Incidentally, I think the same is true of modern set-top boxes (PVRs, Sky, Virgin etc) in that the default is for them to power themselves off if no buttons are pressed for a set time; it certainly applies to my two new PVRs, different makes.

many thanks all, looking forward to trying them out.
Different manufacturers have different settings, on my Sony, any key on the remote will work.
it happens on my PC screen and I eventually found a button on the bottom side of it that works. Nothing on the keyboard does, just the button on the screen itself.
I experience that problem, er I mean bug, on my freeview box. Every update it resets itself to, 'turn off when no one asked me to just to annoy', mode. It'll be in the settings somewhere.
Mine does the same, you have to use the TV remote that came with your TV not the Sky one etc.
thanks Old Geezer, that probably explains why my tv still wants to switch off when i've set it not to . . .
