As has been mentioned, it originated amongst the criminal underworld so that if overheard by the police they wouldn't bee understood.

bhg: "There you are then - a language developed specially so that non-cockneys couldn't understand it. I'm proud to say I'm not a cockney, so will continue to ignore all posts written in that language. " - keep yer barnet on me old china!

mushroom: "is this thread about Lib-Dem attitudes to car use, or cockney rhyming slang? " - it's about the former but the LibFacs have turned it into the latter.
//It's not "Gobbledygook", Cockney came about by people in the East End, and later other parts of London using language that made it difficult for the Peelers to get.//

I similarly digress from the question, but Cockney rhyming slang is interesting. Those who don't understand it need to appreciate that it did not need translating by those who used it. Usually only the first half of the rhyme was stated. So "I aimed for his mouth but caught him between his nose and eyes" would be "I aimed for his north[and south] but caught him between his sweet [repose] and minces [pies]".

hey douggie, remembered who you voted for yet?
Can't for the life of me see why the dumbs think that the roads need to be clear for the bikests and pretend electrickery boarders........up here they all furiously ride on the pavements or promenades. Even when the roads were empty. They also studiously ignore the allocated cycle lanes, that they insisted were necessary, and were subsequently provided at great expense. I am led to surmise that using the cycle lanes doesn't fulfil their inherent need to be a nuisance.
The M5 and A30 would be a sight for sore eyes packed with scooters and electrick bikes all heading for Devon and Cornwall. The recharging points would need to be in the 100s of thousand for the entire route.
