No dietitian attached to the practice?

Some general advice here, scroll past all the bits you know don't apply to your Husband.

He should eat the most nutrient dense food possible. Not cakes or ice cream. Rice or pasta is ok, but not very high in nutrition. Foods containing healthy fats are particularly good...nuts, seeds, avocados, fatty fish such as salmon and sardines..also chicken thighs or legs as opposed to very lean meats. Full fat dairy including Greek yogurt is excellent. And finally, eggs. Full of nutrients. Food that is nutrient dense will help build muscle tissue.
Eat more.......at least 3 cooked meals a day.
Full English every morning for breakfast, an
odd "fry up" at night.
Snack between meals.
That should give you some ideas.
Sqad, are you trying to give Mr Jamjar a heart attack!!
Does he actually 'need' to put on weight or just want to. I looked at Mamyalynne's link which is excellent, and found that apart from the fish that is how I eat yet, according to the practice nurse, I was not even on the BMI scale. After questioning my diet and exercise, decided that there was no action to take.
If Mr J does not have any health problems and feels well, there should be no reason to worry. Worrying could be part of the cause.
ubasses....i don't want ANYBODY to have a heart attack and i fail to see the point of me giving advice which may be life threatening.
I have answered the question,,.... "how can my fit underweight husband gain weight" and i have given what I feel is a relevant answer.
Do you really think that increasing someone's weight at a later stage in life is going to, in your words" give him a heart attack"?
To me,the connection between diet and cardiovascular events is still contentious and for one,I am yet to be convinced.

No,I haven't looked at Mamyas "excellent " link, but by now,it is unlikely to tell me anything that I didnt know and of course I don't have to agree with it's contents.
The OP was quite clear and I answered to the best of my professional ability on a personal basis and without the generalisation of a link or website.
However your opinion is noted.
Just wondering - if the doctor says there is nothing wrong, why does he need to put on weight?
Putting on weight is harder than people think.

It's actually a chore.
I have no problem putting on weight it's losing it that's the problem I was going on suggest chocolate .
I doubt that Sqad mean that every meal should be fat laden.

It can be tough to add weight, when I was under by quite a bit, that in itself brought problems.
jamjar; is it in order to ask your husband's height and weight?
Maybe little and often? I have a similar problem and a big plate of food can seem overwhelming to try and get down let alone 3. Maybe 5 or six small meals/snacks might seem less daunting?
You have some excellent advice here, jamjar. If full meals are daunting then make high calorie small meals. They don't have to be full-fat. One can always cut down on the bacon sarnies once weight attained! I often find it difficult to eat large meals - alas, it is not difficult to put on weight (hormones, honestly, you try dieting after the menopause).
Complan was often used back in the day.

My mum was prescribed some kind of chocolate drink to help her keep her weight up while she was having chemotherapy. I’m sorry I can’t remember its name.

You could also try grated cheese on his dinners.
