Yes. It has to be the right dimensions to fit correctly in the battery compartment and make contact with the two contact points.
Remove the old battery and read the details on it, then you will know which one to buy.

I've probably changed the battery 5 or 6 times so don't remember which voltage was in it when I bought it.At present I'm using from a card of batteries I bought in poundland.They don't seem to last very long and thats why I'm thinking that they may be the wrong voltage.
More likely you have low quality or past best before date batteries.

You need to correct size both in the diameter and the depth. Normailly a CR2032, but you need to chack.
