What kit do you need to plug a guitar into a computer with regards to interfaces, software etc?

Never tried, but wouldn't one just get an adapter so that the lead normally going to the amp goes to the sound card's microphone slot ? I assume they are much the same voltage signal.
As OG says - but I think the sound card's 'line in' would be better than the mic input.
Assuming you've already got a standard guitar to amp lead, you'll need an adaptor like this -

and a program such as Audacity if you want to record the sound.
