We have some very old wall lights ( probably 30 years) and they have glass lamp shades with spring clip fittings. One glass lampshade broke, so I bought a replacement on eBay, but don't know how to remove the old one. Do spring clip fittings fold up or not? Is there some other method? All help very gratefully received.

Remove the bulb. Put your hand carefully up inside the lamp shade, and compress/squeeze the clip fittings as much as you can. Remove the lampshade by tilting it to one side and sliding it downwards, over the clip fitting.

Thank you bookbinder.
I hope that I have been of some help. We have similar lampshades in our house, and I am always on edge when my wife removes them for cleaning. Up to press, all has gone well, but I wish that she would not do it.

That's how I broke the shade, as my lights are full of dead moths etc. Wish I hadn't bothered now. Will try and get someone to help, but I think, long term I'm looking at new light fittings and with screw in bulbs, as bayonet candle bulbs are getting rarer and rarer.
I've got the same sort of light fittings. I find it easier to squeeze the 'wings' by using strong cooking tongs that have nylon ends that have a good grip. It still takes the two of us to do and it is nerve wracking.
A ladder .... & hand vac with attachments margaret is much easier.

I haven't got a hand vac eleanor 2, so, as long term I'm thinking of getting something safer and more modern with screw in bulbs, I'll just leave them dirty I'm afraid. Good suggestion for others in the same boat though.
Yes, theyre a nightmare to try & get off.
