The local residents had an illegal street party, on a very hot evening, which is understandable.
Then along come the police to break it up, and the party goers get angry and there are confrontations with the police.
Some police injured and vehicles wrecked.
Don't you think the police were being provocative and should have let the party continue?

They do seem to have stood back at similar events recently. Maybe there had been criticism for not intervening in the Moss Side one as 2 people got shot dead. There are usually people who stand up as community representatives to criticise the police. Maybe they should also appeal to the communities to leave gatherings until after Covid is no longer an issue -especially in view of the BAME issues around Covid
According to the BBC News on just now that was not the case at all. The party was advertised on social media hence loads of people from outside the area turned up and fights broke out.
Whatever the circumstances there is no excuse for all the injuries and damage to vehicles.
The local residents said that they weren't responsible for the party. They were the ones complaining to the police. The key word in your question is 'illegal'. The police were not the ones being provocative and the "party "should have been stopped right away.
Damned if they do and damned if they don't
