With regard to the 'how would it work' part of your question, the device plugs into an HDMI port on the back of your telly. You then press the 'Source' button on your TV's remote control to change the input signal from 'DTV' (or whatever your telly calls the normal TV source) to 'HDMI1' (or whatever). A Now TV Smart Stick would do the job:

as would an Amazon Fire Stick:

The device connects wirelessly to your wifi router (just as your smart TV does) and is controlled by its own handset. That allows you to choose which app on it you want to use (i.e. Netflix in your case) and to select content from within that app (i.e. to choose which Netflix show you want to watch).
Yes an amazon fire stick is all you need . Costs vary normally around £35/£40
Amazon firesticks are selling for £20 at the moment.
I have an Amazon Firestick too, £30 approx. Plug it into the wall and an HDMI on the TV and select that as the source. I have few tech skills, but it is really straightforward.
Also if you have a Netflix account for only one device you'll need to upgrade that too
If you want to watch it on more than 1 screen 5hat is
