I hope it's a real breakthrough! Her poor parents deserve closure.
I don’t think it will end well, but have never given up hope.
I don’t think it will end well

The thread?
I don't think it will end well either but I agree that her parents deserve some sort of closure.
I can't read The Mail online. Can someone give me a quick brief?
I hope there is closure and the poor kid is finally laid to rest (she is absolutely not alive), but if I'm being honest, I wouldn't trust her parents as far as I could throw them. At the very least, they are horribly negligent, at the worst, complicit in Maddie's disappearance.

Someone they've been looking for, who was in Portugal at the time has turned up in prison in Germany.
The headline bit ummmm

Major' breakthrough in the hunt for Maddie: Police say they have identified a new Madeleine McCann suspect currently in jail in Germany who was in Portuguese resort minutes before the toddler vanished
Met Police has identified 43-year-old man as suspect in Madeleine McCann case
Was known to have been in Praia da Luz, Algarve when she vanished in May 2007
He is expected to be named on German national television this evening
is making a 'major' new appeal in long-running investigation
Funds for Operation Grange, which has exceeded £11m, expired at end of March
Mozz - // At the very least, they are horribly negligent, at the worst, complicit in Maddie's disappearance. //

I don't think anyone, including the McCanns, would argue the first point, the second is just nasty conjecture.
Honest conjecture Andy, and I hope I'm utterly wrong about it. The whole incident doesn't sit well with me.

As I said, I hope I'm way off track with that.
I'm with Mozz. The whole thing stinks.
Bakers Dozen - // I'm with Mozz. The whole thing stinks. //

In what way?

Surely if the McCanns had anything at all to do with their daughter's disappearance, it would be in their interests to ensure that the case is forgotten as soon as possible. The fact that they have gone in completely the opposite direction does not seriously suggest that they were complicit.
They made a mistake and paid the ultimate price. They didn't deserve the vitriol that followed.
Thanks to those who gave me a brief.

I agree with Andy, I don't think they were compicit at all.
In respect of their 'negligence' which parents can say that they never did anything that could have ended badly? I certainly can't say that I never did anything.
people who have been complicit in a crime seldom spend the next few decades campaigning for the crime to be solved, I've noticed.

Neither can I, but I can say that my wife and I took reasonable precautions to protect our children.

If we were abroad, and eating dinner, they were with us, every night, and if they were in the room asleep, so were we, and our kids were a lot older than three when we first went to Europe.

I'm not saying I an a better parent that Mr and Mrs McCann, simply that the notion of leaving my children out of my sight, at night, in a foreign country, is one I would never dream of.
Exactly, jno. Some people just don't think these things through...
It's a while I read it but why was her blood and dna found in the boot of the car and on the floor behind the settee? Why did the parents make several trips to the local rubbish dump, which they said was for removal of garden rubbish. Why did her mother wash the curtains in the apartment? Not the sort of thing when you are holiday with three young children. So many things just don't ring true but even if they were not implicated I will never understand why they were not prosecuted for child neglect or something similar.
