just use the card like cash until you get down to 0.
I had a similar situation a few weeks ago, I just called the CC company explained the situation and they transferred the money back into my Current A/C. Took about 5 days to go through and no charges.
Here is a part of an email I received on 20 March from Barclaycard:
-------------------------------------------
Dear Mr Ellipsis

I’m writing today as I know that coronavirus is a source of concern for many people right now – and I wanted to let you know we’re here to help.

Whether you would like additional support with managing your Barclaycard, or have faced disruption to finances or travel plans, we can work with you to look at ways to make things easier. To help with this, we will be stopping late payment and cash advance fees for Barclaycard customers for the next 90 days – we’ll take care of this, so you won’t need to call us.
-------------------------------------------

"stopping late payment and cash advance fees for Barclaycard customers for the next 90 days" ... this is good. I would require M&S to do likewise, when you can get through to them. You can see why Barclaycard have done it, with so many flights and concerts being cancelled that have all been paid in advance. It saves them a lot of admin to just let you take the cash back out (and if you take out more than you're in credit, you start paying interest on the extra).

If you were really desperate for the cash then I would withdraw it and, if they subsequently charge you a cash advance fee, argue the toss with them about it and if you're ultimately unhappy cancel them and get a different credit card.
if it is a credit balance, as said you can just get it transferred to your bank for no charge

Thank you , it is indeed a credit balance
Question Author
I know it’s there but because of the situation, it’s impossible to get through to them
Have you checked to see if you can do it online when you have logged in to your account or through the app? A credit balance refund is not an unusual thing and most companies have the facility to do it online
Question Author
It does have an online facility but would that allow me to send the amount to my current account? I will take a look tho Barry, thanks
Yess, that's how most of them work. Transfer a positive balance to the account that your direct debits come from
I'm assuming that you've already paid the credit card bill that included the original purchase.

If not, then the refund will cancel out the payment.
Could you do it online, Bobbi?
Question Author
No facility Barry....but
I’ve just this minute put the phone down after speaking to a very helpful young man ( English speaking) he did the transfer no problem and it should be in our current account by Tuesday ,
Many many thanks for everyone’s help here, this is where AB excels itself

Was going to give an update anyway xx
I'm glad you're sorted, Bobbi.

And it was so easy Barry
Thank you
