New W10 laptop with trial McAfee antivirus which is about to expire. Will Defender kick in automatically if McAfee is uninstalled? If not, what do I have to do please? Also do I need Malwarebytes as well as Defender? I'm sure this has been asked before but finding it ...

It will either kick in automatically, or you will be prompted to enable it. Always a good idea to have malwarebytes or similar, whichever antivirus you use.
