Hi guys, hope you're all managing to stay safe and well - difficult times - but a great opportunity for home cooking .... I forgot to buy shredded suet last week, and none of our local little shops stock it. Do you know if there's a substitute - can I use grated margarine? Many thanks in advance, Chox.

General advice is to grate something like Trex (if you can still get that) or perhaps dripping both frozen first.

Marg would melt too quickly.
I have used frozen butter grated and tossed in a little flour. You can use any hard high fat fat, not the easy to spread or slimmers versions. The only thing is if you handle the dough too much the fat will start to melt so mix with a fork and keep the dough cool.
Ps don't try it with things like Stork either...you know the fats that say for baking, easy to cream.

Many thanks folks, for all your help with this. I will keep trying to find proper shredded suet, but will also give the grated frozen butter suggestion. I think I've used hard margarine in the past, so will see how it works with butter. Cheers, everyone - stay safe. Chox.
