We are in “lockdown” in Portugal in that bars, discos and nightclubs are closed, as are non essential shops. Restaurants can serve takeaway meals especially in the more isolated villages. Supermarkets are restricting the number of people in at one time and then it is one out one in. At most times there are 10 to 15 people waiting outside. One trolley at a time loads for the cashier. People stand two trolley distant away. There is no panic buying and we have plenty of loo rolls and most other essentials. Whatever happened to the great British wartime spirit?

'It's all these foreigners fault' - wait for this xenophobic argument.
DTC, I'm sure you're right - the people in the panic queue ahead of me were Estonians or Chinese or Inuit or something. Definitely un-English.
In 80 years time, will we be looking back with fondness at our behaviour now?

Side note - amazing to think that 80 years ago was WWII and 80 years time is 2100! There are people alive now who were adults during WWII, who can have a sensible conversation with adults alive now who will still be alive in 2100.
It's not just here, it's much the same in the States.
...and Australia was suffering too.
Because the great British wartime spirit was largely a myth? Black marketeers, looting while the Blitz was on, even farmers under declaring their production to sell it themselves. Having lived and worked on three continents in my life I've found the 'Great' British are less than great.

as students we were encouraged to speak to the old patients - esp about what their gransparent told them of the old days

he said one of his cohort had got back to days in 1810

yup oral trad back 200 y

sozza if I have hi jacked this thread - some people are most sensitive about keeping on track
because it has been whipped up by the media
whipped up by Social Media more like...people tend to be wary now of the Press, but if their friends, friends ,aunties third cousin says its true on FB -well then it must be!
I used to chat to a chap who was in WW1. He may have talked to soldiers from Waterloo. (I think)
yes app
all media
like the video on tv this morning all adding to more buying
// Because the great British wartime spirit was largely a myth?//

er yes - and no - my mother ( my father was a German POW for five years and deffo had less of the blitz spirit after that ) was at Mile End when it was bombed - the whole of the 'house' ( all the juniors) went down to Cas to help with the casualties and the neighbouring streets carried jugs and kettles of boiled water for sterile dressings

depends of course
midder - the student was met at the head of the street by a resident and taken to the home delivery to deliver the ickle war time baby as otherwise the poncy sid would get robbed beaten up
Did they have toilet paper in Waterloo?
No, Waterloo is a posh name for a bidet:-))
the toilet paper was stuffed into his wellingtons
Am I Right ?
I'm Not Wrong !
Funnily enough, he only told me one 'joke' and that was about toilet paper.
According to my mother and her sisters and parents, there was lots of wartime community spirit in their local community when their area was Bombed during the Liverpool Blitz.
Throughout the war everybody helped each other.
indeed, Spicerack, it was rather a thing in the USA 100+ years ago

The Charge Of The Light Brigade might have been a supermarket rush for bog roll.

Theland, throughout the war, many people did help each other - and throughout the war, some people helped themselves at the expense of others, at the expense of society. Black marketeers, spivs and so on featured in many of my granny's stories.
