16 A. English saddle-horse of yore, missing end of halter, rejected part of bridle (7)
??E?LA?
NB. There's a misprint in one letter in the definition of some clues, I don't think this one is involved.

I'm back...
34 A. Matter in volcano's not an oily gas (8) ???YA???

Nical, 34a could be Ethylene but cannot parse it.
Yes, ETHYLENE - HYLE ('matter') inside ETNE[an] ('volcano's') 'not [an]'
Thanks ProfessorMaisie.

My answer to 1a conflicts with 3d.
My answer to 14a conflicts with 3d,
What am I doing wrong?
14a conflicts with 4d.
Hankir, the entries don’t match the clues for the across ones you mentioned. The clues are for the intermediate rungs of the ladder, not the ones to go in the grid.
thanks cloverjo.
would you like to know the correct order, hankir?
Yes, ProfessorM.

I was offline for a while.
ok hankir -

(outside of grid top)
1st unclued entry
[30ac not entered in grid]
2nd unclued entry
[35ac not entered ...]
3rd unclued entry
[1ac not entered ...]
4th unclued entry
[14ac not entered ...]
5th unclued entry
(outside of grid bottom)
...of the three obscure words in the series, one clue answer (for 30ac - not entered) and one unclued entry (the 2nd one)were new ones on me.

Hankir and PM, thanks. I got 34 myself yesterday afternoon - and didn't come back to the thread then as I was the only one asking questions!
Thanks you PofessorM.

But once I figured out 9-17, I got the two associates and all the words in between.

Thanks a lot for your help.
