Hi how do I find out if my windows xp is wifi enabled on my system I can get to adapter type and it says wide area network I have tried to use utube but I cant find any of the programs on my computer. thanks

Bottom right in the Toolbar(shaded bit bottom of screen) Click on either the wifi symbol if it is there or the wifi bars. Either switch on the wifi or connect to the modem or click on the network and sharing centre option and look for wifiw access
Just noticed that you say that you can detect WAN(Wide Area Network)
I would think that you are looking for LAN(Local Area Network) connectivity for security and speed reasons.
You really need to be finding WLAN ( Wireless Local Area Network) connectivity. Usually your modem or router.
Right click on the wifi icon. You should see something

Click on "Open Network and Sharing Center", a window will appear

Click on "Change adapter settings". A window will appear

In your case the "Wi-Fi" should be disabled. Try to enable it, that should fix it. If you can't enable it, do a restart and try to enable it again.
