It all sounds rather moronic. Having a costume in the first place (does he think he's a wrestler or something) then claiming he's so unfit he couldn't wear it and be ok afterwards, and the suggestion it was the reason he lost... well there's the definition of denial for you. But whatever helps him lift his spirits, that's ok.
