There are special instructions:
From the answer to each clue the solver must omit one letter wherever it occurs (often more than once) before entry in the diagram. Definitions in the clues refer to the full unmutilated answers; subsidiary indications, such as anagrams etc, refer to mutilated forms entered in the
diagram. Numbers in brackets show the lengths of full unmutilated answers. The letters omitted, read in clue order, form an appropriate quotation (in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations).

27a Sturgeon’s summary, in open view,lacking breadth, backing EU (8) _ UL _ _ U _
The letter omitted is an R
25d Mediterranean island moving third to first position in dance (6) E _ _ _ E
The letter omitted is an A

19d Critically correct dagger, head dropping somewhat (7)RE _ ESE
The letter omitted is an N, therefore I assume this is "Retense" (critically correct), but I can't parse the "retese"

Many thanks

No problem, thanks Prof. It is now finished! I enjoyed this one, being a bit different.
yes, it made a nice change, JJ.
Finally finished this at about eleven this morning - more fool me for clinging on to Equipe as a racing team for far too long - and loved it.

I find the plain Azed is usually tricky enough; the non-plain ones are an extra treat. What kind of a mind can create this and then decide it needs spicing up further by making the missing letters spell out a quotation?

I take my hat off.
