Signal Problem Through Dvd Recorder

I have an LG smart TV connected up with a DVD recorder and a blu ray player, both of which are Panasonic. No problem for the TV to find the two devices via their respective HDMIs. As is normal, the TV signal (via the aerial) goes into the TV via the DVD recorder. The picture appears normal but when I came to play a recorded programme today, the picture was in black and white, striped (with sort of prism colours) and the picture didn't fit the screen. It was split across the middle (a bit like old TVs years ago when the picture used to sort of 'page up' the screen). No problem playing DVDs - they appear completely normal and in colour. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be please?

For the record (in case anyone else is ever researching this problem) and the TV manufacturer and retailer don't have the slightest idea (as in this case) this is what happens when you try to watch a recorded programme on a TV when the HDD recorder has been set to NTSA instead of PAL.
Thanks for that info, 237SJ. I'm now kicking myself for not recognising those symptoms although, admittedly, I've not come across them since the days of VHS cassettes!

I doubt you would have recognised them -nobody else did.
