I've just received an email from "[email protected]"

It was addressed to Hi bhg@email (real email address for TV licence used)

Subject [Update Required] - [Online DirectDebit Payment Was Canceled]

Thanks for choosing to pay for your TV Licence by Direct Debit.
We're sorry to let you know that the TV License could not be automatically renewed.
As we couldn't take the latest payment from your bank account, this amount will also need to be paid when you set up your new Direct Debit.
Remember, if you don't keep up with your payments, we may be forced to cancel your license or pass your details to a debt collection agency.

There is then a box to click on , followed by:

Thank you for updating your details - we have now amended our records for the TV Licence in the name of bhg@email (real email address for TV licence used).

We do not need to issue you with a new licence until your existing licence is due for renewal.

Your reference number for this change of details is C**************6. Please note, your TV Licence number remains the same.

2020 TV Licesing

Apart from the fact that my payment is not due until August, I can't see that an official body would address me "HI" and spell "cancelled" the American way with a total typo on "Licensing"

They are a nuisance, I get these often.
Yes, a common scam.
They won't have got your email address from TV licensing. They send out millions of these phishing/scam emails and there is a good chance one will be the same as the email address you used for your TV licence
Yes, they do seem to use 'TV licence' and 'TV license' and some other American spellings but Licensing is correct

I see. I was referring to the bit you had put in quotes which was correct. I now see that one of the spellings of Licensing was incorrect right at the end- but I think by that stage I'd have stopped reading as it was such an obvious scam from the start.
There is a theory that these misspellings are deliberate as they want to narrow down their audience to target the most gullible who wouldn't notice all the obvious errors
