why is train pricing so byzantine? i went to do a short journey today for 2 adults and one child and it turns out it's actually cheaper to buy 3 adult tickets than 2 adults ad 1 child. It's just crazy!

'Groupsave' is intended to encourage people to get together with others to enjoy time out together at off-peak times. It gives a third off the total fare when 3 to 9 adults travel together but the offer isn't available on child fares.

So it makes sense to count a child as an adult in your circumstances, so that you pay a total of 2 adult fares, rather than 2½.

Groupsave is offered by most, but not all, train operators.
Need to ask the train company. Probably one of the benefits of privatisation.
