I understand that the money has been spend designing and supplying the fireworks in Sydney, but as a mark of respect and in support for the people affected by the bush fires, they should not let them off this time.

I'm struggling to understand how letting ff fireworks to see the New Year in is disrespectful. Unless you are one of those that finds offence in everything of course.

So yes, let them off and look forward to the new.
Temps. and winds still rising. People told to evacuate but they don't heed the warnings. Almost 100 unattended fires now . Main highway in one area closed . No escape . Advice given -- stay in your homes for shelter. Just hope they don't catch fire .
What do those desperate ,panic stricken people do?? Put the tv on and watch the FIREWORK display!!!!!
"What do those desperate ,panic stricken people do?? Put the tv on and watch the FIREWORK display!!!!!"

Highly unlikely it is for the millions in Aus and around the World.
^^^It's not a matter of disrespect but using common sense. Sydney is already shrouded in a deep haze of smoke . Why add to it?
And I am not one of those people who takes offence at most things .
This is entirely a matter for the people in Australia.
Of course it is up to the Aussies to make the call, but whats the problem with us discussing it?

^^^That's as maybe but if you have relatives living in that area then it becomes your matter as well.
Just been on the news that the authorities have been forced to abandon the evacuation of the residents in one area.
I think they should go ahead with the display, but the cost, apparently A$6.5 million, seems excessive.
Surely the fireworks will only add to the already highly polluted atmosphere. Many people in the Sidney area are wearing masks. I do have relatives there. I personally feel that they should be cancelled.
If I know the Aussies right, they'll take the opportunity to have a party, sink a few tinnies, watch the fireworks and say cobblers to you bushfire, you're not gonna stop us from having a shindig.
I agree Mozz, having spent some time out there. I could never live there because of that devil may care attitude.
