We are growing spring onions in the garden but does anyone know if they will grow into large onions if I don't pull them up and leave them in longer?

Maybe you are seeing what I am - they are not fattening up ?

I have 3 large tubs in which I am growing spring onions sown 2 weeks apart. I am eating them while they are still slender as if I leave them too long they become tough.

I'm sorry I haven't really answered you, except to say pull them and enjoy them while they are young and tender !
You may get some more advice if you post this question also in the Homes & Garden section?
i can only tell you, that does not seem to work with my garlic. im wondering if you need to buy a specific type, like with beefsteak tomatos.
Bear in mind, Deb, that if you want to grow normal size onions, you plant onion sets, and these small onions are much larger than the white parts of spring onions. I'd be inclined to think they might rot. I've had a lot of bad luck with the garden this year - things not taking off properly - and they say it's due to the sheer dryness of the ground.
Depends upon the strain. We have Ishikuro; they just continue to get fatter and fatter, but they don't turn into 'proper' onions. They end up like the fat spring onions you see in the supermarkets. They are prefectly eatable, at whatever size, thoguht they do get a bit strong as they get older. Ours last well into the autumn.
