The reason that they gave is that they cannot go along with the way the Brexit election candidates might split the vote and prevent Brexit occurring.

If the Brexit party are only contesting constituencies where the Tories are unlikely to win, then it is the Tories, not the Brexit party, that might split the vote.

Can only assume the defectors are accepting of Boris' deal as the best achievable; and are unhappy to brave the no-deal scenario.
