Mrs B is flying Luton - Belfast.

EasyJet are now saying she might not be able to use her photo driving licence, and needs a passport(!)

And that she should 'phone the British embassy!' (She's Irish, been here for 50 years).

Anyone else flown EasyJet into Belfast recently without a passport?

Desperate!

It's an airline policy not a law.
Yes I have just done so.
You need photo ID at the check in/bag drop.
Of course it depends what they are saying she needs her passport for. If it’s just to present to EasyJet staff then any photo ID will do.

Not interested in the legalities, only whether when she gets to the gate at Luton they'll let her on the plane!

Mrs B finally got through to a sensible human at EasyJet who said ‘Nonsense, just turn up with your driving licence!’

What a palaver, eh. And her travelling to Ireland for her brother’s funeral - hardly needed more worry.
Does your wife possess a valid passport?
Question Author
No. Neither of us do. We last went ‘abroad’ in 1981 (excepting Ireland), so haven’t needed one.
OK. Fair enough.
belfast is in the uk ?? no passport needed prob the easyjet staff don't realize this. most are pretty dumb

derek: airlines are a law unto themselves. EasyJet are bad, but not the worst.

With Ryanair, you need a passport to fly ANYWHERE within the UK - London to Newcastle, for example!

And there seems to be no authority willing to stand up and legislate against these stupid rules.

Ryanair’s official policy is you need a passport or National identity card for all international flights and for flights between the UK and Ireland.
For domestic flights within the UK they state that any valid photo ID will do.

Oh I see.

Not that I’m a Unionist (far from it!) but don’t they know that up till now Northern Ireland is part of the ‘Kingdom’?
Not sure what you mean.
The Ryanair policy seems fair to me, and the EasyJet one.

If you fly within the UK with either you don’t need a passport.

Where I have an issue is with the fact that, particularly with RyanAir, they don’t seen to go out of their way to make it clear!

Yes, agreed! A couple of big banners on the top of Google would save much heartache.
