Ave (or is it salve?) atque vale, signor Salvini - to quote a distant ancestor in the last days of the Roman republic before the Caesarean Junckers took over and destroyed the freedoms which had been gradually evolving since the expulsion of Etruscan kings.

Surprised that I haven't seen a thread on this surprising realignment of Italian politics.

Most Brits don't seem to be interested in politics beyond those of the UK and the USA. Further, even my friends who live in Italy can't make head nor tail out of Italian politics!

Italy is at the front line of the "refugee" crisis, Buenchico.

Salvini does not think that Italy should be the dumping ground for illegal migrants who at the very best will be economic parasites. Orban apart, he seems to be the single European politician who thinks Europe is better off without them.

...and for that reason I'm surprised that people here are not more interested.

I see our little friend Pet is lying again.

Ave atque vale is a quote from Catullus.

The Res Publica became an imperial dynasty formed by the Julian and Claudian gens (see Suetonius).

The res publica began with the expulsion of Tarquinius Superbus (Lays of Ancient Rome, anybody? By which I don't mean Augustus' daughter, nor Claudius' wife).

Oops, I should have said gentes.

(Unlike Common Purpose Pet who probably studied formally till he was twenty-five, VE left school at the age of sixteen after just one year in sixth form. The massive deficiency in both my formal education and, I readily admit, my native intelligence, are not things for which I ask special treatment. What I would care to ask, however, is that what I assert as facts are not dismissed as fabrications by a superior being who has decided to classify me for the amusement of people who attend Bedlam as an ignorant moron. I allow that that my assertions may be wrong, of course. And would happily be corrected when they are.)

Sadly just another normal Thursday on Peter Pedant.
Serves him right for his opportunism.
Cynically exploited weaknesses in his ruling coalition in order to try and become PM. The speech by the outgoing PM in the Italian Parliament was a classic.
