a) Why should we agree to accept food not up to our standards ? One of any nation's red lines is to respect trading parners' standards.

b) Even if we did import crepe for some reason, there'd be no permission to export it south, so any that does falls into the area of smuggling which already exists as an issue over any border, regardless.

So again, folk are trying to find additional problems where none exist.
You (nor anyone else) seem to have answered how the backstop will be resolved. And therefore Brexit. We're all optimistic for an outcome. But....
I was under the impression I'd pointed out it was down to the EU and the RoI to decide whether they wanted a free border. If they choose to have one, there's nothing to solve.
Precisely. I've never come across a herring quite as red as this one.
The reality would be that to start with obviously there’d be no change. Then gradually “incidents” would arise such as smuggling, appearance of US chlorinated meat (eg) in Dublin, Paris or Zagreb which would lead to more and more checks and protests and eventually the easiest thing would be to set up border checkpoints. Its one thing saying you “won’t” have something as in “you don’t want them” and another where “won’t” meaning “will not in reality”

And there’s also the matter of dare I say it EU and non-EU migrants coming over the border into N Ireland. At the moment it plainly happens but it might become a lot more of an issue in future.
However you look at it, there has to be a border (of some description) if the UK exits the EU & the Irish Republic remains. I've been saying this for 3 years, anything else is fantasy.
