Philip Hammond said the UK has been working closely with US and European partners in response to Iran's actions.

But ex-Tory party leader Iain Duncan Smith said the Stena Impero's capture was a "major failure" for the UK.

Probably get shot down for this but I like JRM and wished he'd have stood instead of the two who did,I watched him this morning and he's one of the few Ministers who actually answer a question directly
it's not the Navy's fault they've got more admirals than ships. We need to tool them up properly instead of spending gazillions on WSS.
Clearly the seizing of the ship is a UK failure. Our flag, our protection. One can blame it on underfunding of the military if one likes, but we are in austerity aren't we ? Budgets are tight. Or one can blame lack of preparation. We stop an Iranian vessel that is under suspicion of doing something illegal, yet have insufficient force in the area to avoid illegal action by Iran in retaliation. Maybe we should have arranged US military help to be in the area as part of the agreement to stop the suspect craft.
The Royal Navy were quickly deployed to be a fast track immigrant taxi service, by our government, in the Med recently. I see no reason why a combined USN/RN escort be arranged to escort these tankers en masse through the strait until less volatile water is reached. Any attempt to torpedo or mine these vessels should be dealt with as an act of War and dealt with by maximum force available. I hope Boris and POTUS can come up with an arrangement and put Iran back in it's box and its navy on the sea bed once and for all.

How much longer before the moderate Iranians try once again to overthrow their wretched regime?
Maybe we should just stop pussy footing about, as retrocop says.
As a matter of fact most Iranians distrust the US and Britain to the extent that they actually more likely to turn to the clerics, Lamont the comparatively moderate government for reimposition of sanctions etc.
That is what makes the US policy on Iran under Trump so dumb: a strategic hardening of attitude coupled with tactical laissez faire in Syria. When they should be doing things the other way round. It was hardly a surprise to learn that Trump was motivated by spiting Obama

You seem to live in a parallel universe!
