ALBA, do you think the government is funded entirely by taxpayers?
nope, but the money's got to come from somewhere :-)

Must admit, I do have a few questions but this isn't the thread, might start one shortly, am always willing to learn.
>so the move to take away the free tv licences by the government was a philanthropic one? please excuse my cynicism

It was the BBC who has decided to take them away. A sort of revenge measure because the government had effectively reduced the funding. The BBC could have reduced its costs- perhaps by not doubling up on presenters on TV and radio shows, or not paying such large salaries to get the top presenters, or not producing trashy programmes that commercial channels are at least as good at making, but the BBC preferred this as the main way of saving money.
It's quite simple,(for a change) Alba. It gets money from state owned businesses. £51b (of £769b) in 2017.
disband the bbc, and everyone wins.. minus it's employees, some are already loaded anway, the rest could do what eveyone else has to, move on..get on your bikes lol.
This whole sorry saga is down to Cameron and Osborne. They had the helm at the time.
thanks Zacs x

Surely it's time for the Beeb to become either pay-per-view or advertise?

'They' say they pay high salaries in-line with others to prevent them jumping ship to the others, that's all fine and dandy, but with the 'others' comes the choice of buying their wares or not.
On TOP of paying for a tv licence....
If they are entitled to the credit they should already be receiving it. It is unconscionable that those entitled have the onus put on them to find out and apply. Those responsible for distributing others' rights should be making the contact and sorting it out.

Meanwhile what is all this about banks and PPI ?
PPI? Never heard of it...
The free TV licence fee for over 75s was an election bribe by Gordon Brown. As such, it was proper that the Government pay for it.
Oily Osborne shifting the responsibility to the broadcaster was a snide political act just as disgusting as Brown’s original bribe. It was effectively a £570million cut in the BBCs budget.

Obviously, the people who have been accepting the bribe feel aggrieved when the money dries up. But it is not something the tax payer or the licence fee payer should be funding.
