That doesn't seem to have changed then. Thank you, ve, for at least answering:-) x
TTT, yes I suppose my years as a senior teacher and my degree in education are a bit rusty.
//You need a degree (or to be working towards one) - I only know because boy #2 wants to be an armed police officer but the whole degree thing is putting him off.//

It would put me off also. If he were to succeed in becoming an authorised firearms officer I can assure you that god forbid he ,in
his own mind, justifiably shot and killed a suspect then a degree is worthless when attempting to justify your actions in Coroner's Court or the Old Bailey. You can be the Pope and swear on a stack of bibles but if you screw up the bible or a degree is of no use in a cell and does not butter any parsnips with a hostile jury.
Compassion and common sense are key. My wife was a successful Staff Nurse for fourty years and trained at St Mary's Paddington Medical school. She did not need a degree. Before she retired about three years ago she had to mentor prospective nurses who were undergoing their degree studies. Most, she discovered did not have the vocation, aptitude or compassion required. A lot were lazy and horrified to hear they should turn patients to prevent bed sores and gagged when requested to mop up bodily fluids in the examination room. None of the excellent nurses in my wife's set had degrees. Most of the foreign imported nurses around this area have difficulty grasping the Language and their ability to measure correct medicinal doses is an accident /negligence waiting to happen. Are foreign nurses from say, the Phillipines expected to have degrees when they are fast tracked into the NHS to fill the breech?
You seem to be assuming that people can only have one or the other, retro. In my first day as a student nurse, I stopped them killing a patient who was extremely allergic to penicillin, in spite of their years of experience. What is wrong with having both?

Can you tell me if the excellent Phillipino nurses both male and female who have nursed me recently are required to be qualified to a UK degree standard?
If they are working in the UK, then they will obviously need the same or equivalent qualification, yes.

I would have questioned their sanity, retro...... just joking.....

Thanks for all the replies. I think it went slightly off track at the end, although I do get the thinking. Sorry but I wasn't available till now; Squad, the report mentioned a degree qualification for the police force. There may well have been a similar report for prison officers but I didn't see it. My best mate was a prison officer for many years and retired due to ill health when he was the Senior Admissions Officer at Strangeways. He suffered heart problems and stress after the riots of 1991, so much so that he died in 1999. It's his anniversary tomorrow and I will be placing flowers on his grave, as I have done every year since he died. Sorry folks. That did stray right off track didn't it? But we had been friends since nursery school. I still miss him.
