How long does it take for penicillin to work? I've been using them for an ear infection for 3 days now and there's no change. Thanks.

OK Hooby......certainly sounds like a furuncle that has burst and is pouring pus in which case that is good news. The pain should ease up now and by the weekend it should have settled. Finish the penicillin tablets and just wipe the pus away from your ear. The outer ear infections tend to be rather resistant to any kind of treatment, but do clear. If you have...

Ah! that's fine.

An update Sqad: seen a different doctor and this one has said the base of my outer ear is infected and inflamed. The eardrum looks fine, so nothing sinister. She's prescribed more flucloxacillin as she didn't think I'd been given enough and also told me to carry on using the otomize ear spray. Here's hoping this works now. Thanks for your advice.
Thanks for the feedback...you should be fine by Monday....this Monday ;-)

Hi Sqad, another update : my condition has not improved one bit, infact it's probably worsened. The pain is just as constant and sharp, the yellow discharge is still coming out, l have tinnitus and it's painful when I chew. I've actually seen the doctor today ( they kept sending me to nurse practitioners ) and he has taken a swab for analysis, put me on co - amoxiclav and given me an appointment to see him again next week. He said he could only see part of my eardrum as it is covered in discharge material, but the bit he saw was intact. What's your take on it? Thanks. :-)
You must have been really bad pain, hope the infection improves soon .
My diagnosis hasn't changed......it being a furuncle that is burst and has set up a secondary infection in the outer ear.
The swab that you Dr has taken, will be helpful.
ENt management by GP's is notoriously hit and miss in my opinion, as what you really need is someone who can clean out the ear, possibly on a daily basis and insert antibiotic steroid dressings daily.
I am not surprised that you situation is unsatisfactory.....it often happens with such situations.
Hooby, might i suggest that you start another thread e.g. Penicillin 2 as it is so far back that any further updates from you may well be missed.
