A friend had similar pain a few years ago and it was kidney stones.
I agree with Sam1960.
It could be due to many things in the water works system but a kidney stone is high up in the pecking order.
See his GP.

Much appreciated for your replies. Will make sure he gets an appointment with his gp, tomorrow.
Sounds like a kidney infection.
Question Author
He hasn't got a fever or feels ill.
Maybe a urine infection? It's just that I'm not sure someone would wee more often with renal colic
Question Author
It does seem it's to do with kidney. I'll let you know in time. Thanks.
Get a appointment with the doc. It could be just an infection. I was visiting the loo more than average. Turned out I had an enlarged prostate.

Husband went to see GP early this evening. Doesn't think anything serious. Put it down to muscle strain/ problems.
Feedback appreciated.
Patsy - you are so lucky in getting an appointment so quick. We have to wait 4 weeks now - used to be 2.

They seem to ask what the problem is now. I suppose they weigh up the urgency of each patient. They must have guide lines as to what is classed as an emergency appointments. We are very lucky where we are, JJ, here in Gloucestershire.

Husband did have urine infection after all, sqad. They took water sample just in case, at the time. Surgery rang this morning, to say antibiotics were waiting.
