I went to a restaurant a while ago (possibly in Rome... maybe Zurich..) where they served a sharing plate of thinly sliced raw steak. Everybody's dining plate was really hot so you cook your own meat on your plate. No idea what the plates were or where I can get some from, any ideas...?

Google "stone grills" and I'm sure there will be a few stores that sell them. I found a few on amazon, as well as this site:

Did they make you do the washing up as well? ;-p
One of our early microwave ovens came with a plate which you could heat for a minute or two and then cook thin slices of steak in it. Perhaps a cookshop might stock such things.
Clever that! as you can’t complain that the steak is under/over cooked!
That are stone grills and you can buy them easily from shops that sell electronic kitchen items.
I take it that they paid you the chef's salary for doing the cooking (or at least knocked it off your bill).
You know how the dish is served when you order, so you wouldn't squeal about the chef's salary.
Did you give yourself 10% service charge.

I could have negotiated the chef's salary but my Italian only stretched as far a birra!
My service was terrible so definitely no 10% tips!
