The bloke guiding people of the smaller boat was, on the face of it quite brave. He could have done a runner but stayed to help people off the walkway.

goodness, I was on that ship in Venice a few years ago - the little one, not the big one. That's scary. Big liners like that really shouldn't be inside the lagoon at all.

It looks like he was crew. Helping people was his job. When you are crew, you don`t run away.

It is in times of stress when we see both the good and bad side of people and he did good lol
Tell that to the Captain of the Costa Concordia. And yes, even though it was his duty, he can still be commended for doing it.
One of the things that we were always taught was "A trained mind is better than an untrained mind" When you have a drill and know what to do in an emergency, you go into automatic mode and don`t think about anything but what has been drilled into you. I guess that is what that guy was thinking
When you’ve got a few thousand tons moving without brakes there’s not much to stop it.
That's the main reason I don't like seagoing vessels with only one engine.
