Whilst I've not taken a deep interest, have they really gone bust, or simply sold off Homebase and exited the UK market ? Can Homebase help ?
As far as I can tell, the Bunnings stores (that were re-branded from Homebase) are to revert to the Homebase name and will still be trading.
As far as I can tell from a bit of googling, Sovereign strimmers are manufactured by Flymo, to be sold as an in-house brand by Homebase (which was briefly trading as Bunnings Warehouse after being bought by the Australian Wesfarmers group, who later sold Bunnings/Homebase for just £1 after losing over half a billion pounds in just two years).

Homebase continue to sell the Sovereign brand (although not the petrol strimmer)

Given that your OH's contract was with Bunnings/Homebase, it would seem that it should now be Homebase which he needs to contact. (The investment group which bought Bunnings/Homebase got it for just £1 on the basis that it would take on all of the firm's liabilities, so that should include refunding disgruntled customers).
