Just watched Michael Portillo's trip down this at Abergavenny.
It brought back memories of us going down there many years ago.
Couldn't do it now!
Anyone else been down the big pit?

No. Strange. Most of my relatives worked down the Welsh mines at one time or other.
My Uncle worked in Pit Rescue and was a fireman. My father married my Devonian mother in 1940 and she was taken down a mine during her very short honeymoon ( War work called)One day ,maybe, I will visit a mine.
I went down The Big Pit a couple of years ago when we were on holiday in Wales. mr M wasnt keen so I went down on my own, well with a crowd of other tourists and simply loved it. It was really spacious down there and not as claustophobic as mr M imagined, but nevertheles a humbling experience thinking of people and ponies spending the best part of their lives underground.
Yes, but not the one in Abergavenny. ;-)

Brilliant thank you.
Went down Bedwas mine on an open day once. Deepest in the area I think it was. It’s capped off now and the colliery site gone back to nature.
Hi Caran
Yes - went to The Big Pit a few years ago and loved it. We were fortunate enough to have a really funny ex miner take us down who made the visit even better. Would recommend the visit to anyone.
