It is often said, "nothing unusual, we just get to know about them more easily these days".

Not so really, why? Because in this case this murder was reported half way down this paper's web page, the headlines? Yes you've got it the Sussex's baby.

The USA has capital punishment, so by your reasoning, it should have a very low crime rate.
But in fact, US cities are far more dangerous than London, and are among the most dangerous places to live in terms of you might get murdered.
Justsaying.
What would the crime rates be there, gromit, if they didn't have capital punishment? Higher or lower? And how can you tell?

It does not seem to be panning out that way in Baltimore, St. Louis, Washington.
Given the choice of living in any of those crime infested areas, or London, I know which I would choose.
Ah, we’re already onto capital punishment.. it’s only page 3! Typical, boobs...
There had been sixty-four murders in London by this time last year, that's forty-five per cent HIGHER than the the current figure.
Apologies, that should have been forty-two per cent higher.
Is there some confusion between Boyz N The Hood and boys in the hoodies?
We are not Americans. We do not have the American mind set. In the USA felons can be on death row for over twenty five years, then may, only may, get a lethal injection. Here we hung them after a relatively short duration. These cowards would be terrified of swinging, and it might make them think twice knowing their possible fate. Either way we would be rid of scum.

By definition, criminals are not very bright, from the shoplifter to the murderer, they are rarely known for fascinating insights into the consequences of their actions. That requires an ability to think ahead and look at possible scenarios, something the average criminal is probably incapable of doing.

I have said before, and I say again, I don't believe that anyone murders someone while thinking about the potential results of being caught and convicted for it. Obviously, if they did, they wouldn't do the murder.

But people who murder people don't think, they just act - which is why Capital Punishment is no deterrent, because no-one ponders its implications in advance of the act.
Capital punishment isn't a deterrent - it's a means of ensuring the crime isn't repeated.
A lot of States in the US don't have the death penalty. I wonder how their murder rates compare with the States that do. (I'd guess, not very well or we'd keep hearing about them)
But anyway, if foreigners have higher murder rates, why keep importing them. I've seen black kids in London blaming the increase in violence on recent immigrants(and they ought to know)
‘I've seen black kids in London blaming the increase in violence on recent immigrants’
Aside from this potentially blowing the minds of a few ABers......
Have you, spicey? Really?
Why would I say it if I hadn't? I'm not left-wing.
I don't know that they were telling the truth but it certainly had the ring of truth. If people from sometimes war ravaged countries come here and enter the drugs trade, the existing gangs have to either move out or 'up their game' as they said.

That is obviously the result - but it's rarely used as an incentive, the 'deterrent' argument - failed though it is, is trotted out on an almost daily basis by sections of the media, and some regulars on here.
Was this something you overheard, saw in a media outlet, discussed with someone?
That was to spicey.
AH, //the 'deterrent' argument - failed though it is, is trotted out on an almost daily basis by sections of the media, and some regulars on here. //

Their opinions aren't mine.
capitol punishment would free up prison space, hard labour might focus criminal minds ? being banged up today seems like a badge of honor for some and an occupational hazard.
Send them out to help rebuild some of the countries that we have helped to decimate. Hard graft and discipline might just help to rehabilitate some and also relieve the overcrowding in our prisons.
