Unfortunately I think the public or either too dim, or scared, or apathetic to change the status quo. Hence the vote for the backsliding fence sitters the Limp Dems.
Look at the proportional representation farrago, and that was proposed by Clegg.

In fairness I’m not sure you can accuse the Lib Dems of sitting in the fence:
“Vote for us to stop Brexit” is about as unfencelike as it gets, whether you agree with them or not.
