New series starting on Sky this evening if anyone is interested..

I was in my early teens when the disaster happened and didn't realise the seriousness of it and impact until much later on.

Some very brave and selfless people went in to cap that reactor off after it popped. RIP
It's not on until tomorrow (9pm, Sky Atlantic).
And I must remember to record it.
The actual impact was nothing compared to what could have happened. It was days or less from a thermonuclear blast which would have wiped out everything within a 200km
radius and possible left much of Europe uninhabitable for 1000s of years. It was actually Sweden which raised the alarm worldwide and Gorbachev only broadcast to the nation in mid May, 3 weeks after the original accident.
In fact the most amazing heroism was by those who went down below to drain contaminated water from below the floor.
