Can anyone tell me why, at this time of year, there always seem to be up to a dozen flies orbiting light fittings in the middle of the room? Even when the light is switched off! Bluebottles don't appear to have this habit.

thats always baffled me maybe they are waiting for them to come on and its true those really big fat black flies dont do it i hope someone can answer this its one of those lifes misteries lol
I think it's because they use the sun/moon to navigate - they keep it to the same side when they're flying about.

When they come inside, they try to do the same thing using the light bulb, and end up flying in circles!

Maybe someone else can confirm this?

Yes, I'm aware of the sun/moon theory. But they do this even when there is no light on. In fact, I've seen them do this in a room with no centre light.
