True, for example the harp version I posted recently.

But my understanding (no idea how authentic this is, just something I read somewhere) is that Bach intended it for church organ where the organist shoud wait for the echoes to die during the pauses in the opening bars - something which is apparent in the Notre Dame version.
As I said at the time I loved the harp version too - divine.
