Been posting on MB owners forums but no worthwhile answers forthcoming.
To cut a long story short just returned from my second visit to a garage staffed by Mercedes trained fitters. A new light control unit was fitted as I was getting error messages coming up on the dash. Was informed the code for this new CU, after being fitted was not being recognised by the car, and they, the garage would have to work with Mercedes tech dept to reprogram the software the same time as garage was had their diagnostic machine plugged into the diagnostic port. Anyone heard of this.

Anyone?
I've never heard of this but it doesn't seem unreasonable that someone in the Mercedes tech dept needs to be "live" on the other end of the telephone, making suggestions to your garage, being told the outcome then making further suggestions etc until the problem is sorted.
I had a problem like this on a toyota all the service department did was to fax/e-mail japan the problem was solved within 24hours
