RE. isn't something that is anywhere near essential in todays world but First Aid should be taught in every school and I don't mean a quick course, it should be on the curriculum for sure, imagine the lives that could be saved.!!

I wonder if it is on the curriculum in any other countries?

Mental Health is also taught now. I think the whole curriculum probably needs a major update to bring it into this century though.
I was (more or less) forced to take Citizenship in secondary school (due to a refusal by the school to let me take all the science subjects I wanted) and I found it one of the biggest waste of education times imaginable; only rivalled by the compulsory General Studies nonsense that wasted more of my time at the Polytechnic.
Cheers Sherrardk, will have a butchers at that. Thank you.
Out of interest, og, what sort of things did it include? I wondered if has changed now.
I enjoyed A level General Studies. It was a bit of a break from the other three 'serious' subjects that I studied at school.
What is General Studies? X
Which ? Both were a long long time ago now.

Citizenship related to social/care type stuff, like, for example, getting someone from Shelter in to give a talk. Noting that ever stuck with me or been any use. General Studies were more arty farty as I recall. Can remember one consisting of watching a film of the same aircraft land time after time after time after ... (Was even more annoying since the time used could have been spent doing what then became a compulsory night class.)
NOTHING
Culture, science and society. A bit of a mishmash, Pixie. Nothing too strenuous.
When pupils used to follow a rigid path of all science A levels or all arts subject A levels general studies was used to make them more ‘rounded’ and to look at the bits they were missing out on. It’s not so relevant now as pupils tend to mix sciences and arts subject up. It’s also regarded as an easy A level to fill up time and increase successes (for both the pupils and the institution).
I remember spending time out at an English comprehensive in my 5th year and they did something called General Studies. I realised it wasn’t most people’s favourite subject for nothing :-)
"Rounded" could be done in one's own time or later in life. Refusing an interest that one would work at and score well in for some nonsense that did nothing but bore, is a useless strategy that adversely affects those imposed on.

Glad I completed school before they decided to ruin subjects by mixing them, and glad not to have been young when final scores were lost on route before one even got to the exam. Like everything else in life, education going to hell in a handbasket instead of getting rid of the old failures and improving.
Thanks, tilly and og xx I have trouble even understanding the GCSE grading, now that it is numbered 1-9. I hope employers understand it.
