Looking for some weedkiller for the veg garden. Need something fairly strong for dandelions and ground elder among other ghastly intruders. Most seem to say they are great on paths, but I want to be able to plant/sew th is year not next. Any recommendations?

No expert by any means but I can only suggest seeing what's available on the shop shelves these days, when effective weedkillers are banned. Check labels. Otherwise hand remove, maybe hoe, and keep on top of it ?
Glyphosate only kills actively growing plants it is sprayed onto. Anything that doesn't land on a plantand touhes soil is quickly bound to clay do has no effect on what is subsequently planted.
Trouble with Glyphosate is that there seems to be good proof that it does linger in the soil and contaminate plants and is then cancer forming. Better the old method of did.dig, dig, hoe hoe hoe.
All plants will eventually give up if disturbed enough for long enough, thus pure graft will do it in time. If you choose to use Roundup or similar then you can google Roundup halflife and you will see that in three years it (Roundup) will effectively have disappeared - it is not advisable to use Roundup close to food plants. Using Roundup responsibly in a domestic garden means putting the solution into a spray bottle of the type sold with glass cleaner, etc. in it. Spray as close to your target as effectively covers it - do not spray indiscriminately. Results are obvious within a week or so and (as mentioned above) you can replant immediately.
