Internationally one has seen the sympathy afforded to the victims and relatives of the outrageous act of terrorism in New Zealand and quite rightly so, it was and still is a tragic event.
One can understand the outpourings of grief seen on TV amongst the muslim community as they grieve for those involved.
However, I question the degree of emotional involvement of the Prime Minister Jacinda Arden as, although difficult to find the right pitch, has overstepped the mark for somebody of her standing , in the physical actions of cuddling and embracing the involved. One would accept this from the relatives and friends but not from the head of state....i.e the prime minister and one could not imagine such outpourings physical and emotional sympathy from the Queen or Mrs T. May.
At times, as on AB, I find the over-reaction beginning to verge on insincerity.

She, as head of State, represents the grief of the whole country and thus it's perfectly fine for her to embrace the recently bereaved etc- because the most natural human response to an horrific event is to embrace. Nothing undignified about being honest in your emotions, whoever and whatever you are, beats the heck out of a stiff upper lip.

Ellipsis, //Ignore my questions, then. //

What questions have I ignored?
We should keep our mouths shut for the sake of diversity.
Can of worms comes to mind.
Just from my outsiders perspective, it seems this was the question

"Was the mosque investigated five years ago, naomi? Did they already have "security measures" in place?"
^ that to Naomi
one last point, wasn´t Sqad in the medical profession? so surely outpouring of grief was something he experienced daily.
But as a Doctor it probably didn't land on him and it was probably the part of his job he neither enjoyed nor wanted to participate in, understandably. You can't be too emotionally attached as a doctor to your patience else every day you'd be an emotional wreck.

Piggy, yeas outpouring of grief was the norm, but mainly if not completely amongst relatives and close friends, but the main point of my OP was to me, the excessive outpouring of emotions , real or apparent, to someone unrelated to the victims.
The thread seems to have wondered off this basic topic.
Spath...I never got involved emotionally with patients, as there was work to be continued, decisions to make with out the intervention of emotion.

Why a prime minister of non Muslim faith decked in a Hijab and showing the sort of emotion that we have seen, smacks to me of over bidding one's hand.
There have been 6,000 Christians killed in North Nigeria by the Fulan in the last 3 months, no hand wringing over them, no minutes silence , no urgent questions about Christianphobia, in the Commons or anywhere else that I can see.
spath, thank you. Apparently so, but that's no reason not to re-visit five years on.
Further to my last post ; apologies to Kate;

'British Labour MP Kate Hoey has condemned the mainstream media for ignoring the “slaughter” of over 100 Christians in Nigeria by Muslim militants over the past three weeks.
“Christians slaughtered in Nigeria — a Commonwealth country! Is MSM [mainstream media] reporting?” the Labour MP wrote on Sunday.

“The recent death toll of Christians in Nigeria has reached 120 with this week’s slaughter of more than 50 by Fulani Muslim militants in the Kaduna state of Nigeria, the Christian Post reported,”
Erdogan has bought WW1 into it !

As I said earlier, our opinions do not matter, but those of New Zealand do.

Did you bother reading that article^.
It's a paean to Mz Arden and her 'progressive' politics.
All very nice for the aBBC but where does it mention NZ's opinion.
Unlike you, spicerack, I did. Let me pick out relevant paragraphs for you:
"Closer to home, in New Zealand, BBC News correspondent Hywel Griffith says he has "heard her words - 'we are one, they are us' - spoken back to me by the families of victims here in Christchurch". Even Judith Collins, from the opposition National Party, told parliament that the prime minister had been "outstanding"."

and

"Colin James, a political analyst in New Zealand, tells BBC News that having spent "quite a bit of time" with Ms Arden, he's not surprised by the praise she's now getting.

"She was firm, sombre, positive and in charge," he said. "And this is something I've said often - there's not a nasty cell in her body, but she's not a pushover. It's an unusual combination." "
I say it's a paean to Mz Arden.
You say no
and then point out the gushing praise she received in the article.
// My point is that her "gush" of emotions, highlights modern trends of grief, exaggerated both in frequency and in depth verging on insincerity. That was my point.//

I think Srdern's self image was of head of a sleepy little country where nothing awful happens, but everyone just gets on with living and er having a good time

and she has had a shock

I mean think of the public horror if the 22 dead kids in Manchester Arena if someone said - sorry boys he was a white kid who was once Christian .....
I think 3.5m people ( =pop of gtr manch) who would go aaaargh
I think Jacinda Ardern has decided that now is the time to put a line in the sand over the use of guns in New Zealand and good for her.Certainly beats Trump paying lip service to all the shootings in the States.
Sqad, in general people are more tactile now. Which can never be a bad thing. I quite understand your point but, it’s old fashioned. Do you know couples are now known to kiss each other outside the bedroom . ,!!!! ;*)
^Who wants to see people slobbering over each other in public?
(unless it's two hot birds)
