a week or so ago I downloaded word but thought it didn't work. however I have just found an ICON GP on the desktop. didn't know what it was so clicked on it and it was word but it was asking me

to pay for it
to activate for it
to try it

I thought it free

Microsoft Word isn't free. Was it some other type of word processing package?
Buenchico recommends somefree spreadheets, powerpoint and word tools. Openoffice is free. I gave up and paid for word though as there were compatibility issues when i was sharing documents with Word users
Anything from Microsoft is rarely free.
I have seen free trials though of microsoft office- but maybe not direct from Microsoft

yes think you're right - it was open office but I'll try again later as that didn't work either. thanks for replies
Try Libreoffice or wps office ?
What do you mean "not work".
If you can't start a new doc, that's one thing; but if you can't open an existing one it may be the document file that has an issue.

Open Office is fine for me (it's free to download) but I don't share documents with others so I don't have the compatibility problems ff mentions.
I don't loath Bill Gates. He gives a massive % of his earning to charity.
Wordpad is free .
