Here we are on Monday already. I wasn't able to start it on Saturday and, when I did , I nearly gave up because I made so little progress. And then! Big breakthrough when I got "worst case scenario". So, I nearly have finished it. but a couple I need explanations please.
54ac Nab treasure finally seen drifting beneath the waves. It's an anagram and gives "subterranean" but that doesn't mean "beneath the waves", does it?

34d Nice people, even, may suffer such national prejudice. With the letters I have, "gallophobia" fits and people from Nice could suffer that. But what gives with the" even " part?
24ac Madcap result of strike at end of match. I am sure the answer is "hothead" but I don't get the "result o of strike" part
And finally a choice

25d Do what Morse did, failing to get time for female . With the letters I have the answer could be "detect" or "detach" But I don't understand why for either.

As always I'd be glad of advice.

24 Strike a match on the box and the head becomes hot.
24 when you strike a match you get a 'hot head'
54a anagram of nab treasure and last letter of see(N)
25 Defect (failing) change F(emale) to T(ime)
25d.,Detect- defect(failing) with t(time) for f(female)
Good Evening Steven

If you strike a swan vesta type match, its head bursts into flame (hothead)

Detect (DetectiveInspector Morse)
Defect = failing, swap the F (female)for T (time) = Detect
Subterranean is obviously the answer, From Latin it means "below the land" whereas Submarine means below the sea.
However in common usage subterranean relates to below the Earth's surface. Therefore in modern parlance it could be below the waves (the surface ). BUT I think it is pretty poor!
34d Gallophobia is the fear of France or French culture. Nice people (people from the city of Nice) are French also, therefore I think that "even" is just to show emphasis. Even French people can have a fear of France or French people.
forget that last answer

Thank you all so much. And thank you jj109 for the verdict on subterranean . I agree. Better get back to some work. I am very grateful to you all

Nice people using nice as kind are not normally feared. Therefore using it as "French" people from Nice, these people are be feared by people who have Gallophobia. EVEN "nice" people can be feared
