Sound carries through air, the moon has no atmosphere. The astronauts were wearing suits filled with air so they could hear sound from speakers/earphones within them. A speaker at full blast a short distance away from the astronauts would emit no sound at all.

The Pear tree has one. :-)
So they shout 'fore'? How thoughtful. It's a shame they are ignored when they fall on cars.

The thread went off on a bit of a tangent from my original question but I was hoping that someone would explain how the sound of metal pins could be heard, when they was hammered into the Moons surface.
The sound of metal pins could be heard because the sound of the hammering will vibrate through the solid particles in the moon. Say you had a metal rod going into the moon, and you pressed your ear against this whilst the hammering was done, the sound would travel through the pins, into the moon, into the metal rod into your ear.

The thing with sound in space is, it doesn't travel through space, but it travels through solids in space, if you get me?
Sound can't just travel, it needs to travel through something in the form of vibration. So it can travel through the hard moon, but not the empty vacuum air of space

Yes,read Richard Powers 'The Overstory' which was shortlisted for last year's Booker Prize.

Anyway,back to the moon....
Lunacy. That's from the moon too.
