How would you design a sensible and fair immigration policy, and make provision for getting rid of undesirables?

Since a huge proportion of undesirables are home grown I would happily send both them and the non home grown nasties to a large island in the middle of a very large ocean.... both groups should be treated equally.....of course we are then left with the children of said nasties who should be helped to grow up to be useful members of society....

A good start.
Of course it goes without saying that we are all a product of migration somewhere along our ancestry lines....French and Belgian not too far back in my ancestry (the ones I have met!)....beginning of 20th century!
One out, one max in.
As for removing undesirables, not an immigration issue. Courts need to start banishing folk.
i wouldnt; i vote for other people to do that for me

But you are being asked for a sensible immigration policy.
You have an opinion?
Fair and sensible?

"Sensible" is inviting foreigners to fill a skills gap. And "fair" is saying we don't mind where you come from. But we will ask the question which candidate is more likely to fit in - or not.

You've noticed that I've applied a basic moral rule about immigration policy: that it should be designed to benefit the host nation.

That is fair and sensible.
If it were up to me I'd implement an Australian style of immigration policy. One based on a points system that was itself based on the employment needs of the nation. Simple really.

If you're a highly qualified foreign heart surgeon and we have a surfeit of heart surgeons, thanks but no visa for you I'm afraid. If you're a highly qualified mason and we have a deficit of masons, welcome.

This system is great because; a) it doesn't discriminate on the basis of colour, religion, sex, sexual preference, age, etc. and b) the most qualified for a specific task get to live and work and pay income tax in the UK. Win, win as far as I can see. The unqualified or the not required qualified do not enter.

Only people hell bent on a nation's destruction and/or want unfettered immigration because they believe it will enhance their election prospects advocate for open door immigration policies.

Yes another sensible answer.
As for the “undesirables” I assume you mean criminals who are not UK nationals?

If so, I'd go for a combination of number of offences with a sliding scale. For instance, murder, rape, GBH, etc., incarceration and immediate deportation. Lesser offences such as ABH, would be a two-strike rule and then deportation. Minor offences would be three-strike rule and then deportation.

An effective stop and search policy would help.
Theland

Fat chance. Everyone is terrified of being labelled a racist or an Islamophobe if they increase “stop-n-search” amongst those groups.

We truly live in a terrifying Orwellian world where it is seen as racist to routinely stop and search the very demographic that is responsible for the majority of knife crime in the UK. We must be living in a bizarre alternate reality where the Koran contains literal verses that explicitly state that Muslims should murder the unbelievers and when this fact is pointed out, the person stating this patently demonstrable truth is ridiculed and/or gets his post deleted on social media....

Three, two, one....
Question Author
I have been called racist myself for calling a spade a spade.
Oops! There I go again!
But you are right.
The Abbott and Lammy factor.
Theland

Oh god. You've mentioned the “A” person.

Don't get me started on that racist, imbecilic, innumerate, vile creature that calls itself the “shadow home secretary”....
