Vitamin D Deficiency

Following a rheumatology appointment last week I was sent for a blood test and the result was that I have a severe vitamin D deficiency. I do suffer a lot of the symptoms associated with lack of vit D.

The consultant has asked for me to be prescribed 60,000 iu Colecalciferol per week for 8-12 weeks and then 1000-2000 maintenance after that.

I've checked which foods naturally contain vit D and I do eat most of them regularly so what other reasons would there be for the deficiency?

Buy the vitamin D spray which you spray under your tongue (Amazon sell it). You would need a ton of food to eat the equivalent. And get outside more. Nothing causes these lack of vitamins; I had a DNA test which showed that I would struggle to absorb ANY iron or B12 from food- which is totally spot on. So I now ask for B12 shots which seem to work loads better.

Will look into the spray. Is it available in chemists?
Hi tigger...Amazon and Holland and Barrett both do it.

Would they be the same strength you get from your GP?

I take 2, several times per week. I learned from someone who researched vitamin D, that doses can be taken all at once, as long as you get the required amount for the week.
Good idea to get out as much as possible in this unseasonal sun we're having, tigger - a very good source of Vit D
And I read that you can only take it for short periods of time.
I never drink coffee. Can't stand the stuff. I don't have any vitamin deficencies either. In fact, I haven't seen my doctor for years. I cringe when I read threads like this on here. AB = The old folks home of the internet. I'm 71 this year people. Old folks homes and doctors aren't for me. I won't be ill. It's not allowed. But I'm thankful for my good health and sorry for those that don't have it. It's just Kismet. Innit?
Just for my information, does anyone know the difference between vitamin D, D2 and D3?
//All about Vitamin D2
Plants produce this form of Vitamin D when they are exposed to UV light (in much the same way as our bodies naturally produce Vitamin D). The most common example is wild mushrooms or mushrooms produced under UV light. Dairy-free milk (including soya, coconut, and almond milk) are often boosted with D2.

All about Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is the biologically active form of the vitamin, found in our bodies and in animals. When sunlight hits exposed skin, a reactive process converts cholesterol into Vitamin D3.

Although you need both forms, Vitamin D3 is more important for your health and wellbeing. Our bodies absorb and use Vitamin D3 better, and it is more effective at treating diseases.

Studies have shown that it’s Vitamin D3, not D2, that maintains levels of Vitamin D in our body even over winter months. It’s important to note that dietary sources of Vitamin D3 can only be found in animal products. So if you’re vegan, you need to pay extra attention to supplementing your diet with Vitamin D3.//
Lynne thanks for info.
You're welcome.

Thanks everyone!

Picking up my prescription tomorrow. I've been taking 3 tabs of 400iu since Friday.

Do I need to take a calcium sup. as well?
I can't see it doing any harm. You can get them very cheaply.
tigger think the best person to ask will be your GP.
I was told that it’s not that rare and about 50% of uk population suffer varying degrees of deficiency
Sorry should have added that I am severely deficient and was on prescription strength medication and then over the counter. Just waiting for blood results to see how I’m doing now

I read that VitD helps to absorb calcium or something along those lines. Will ask the pharmacist.

Its been sunshine and blue skies in South London so been doing quite a bit of walking over the last few days :o)
